Homegrown Music Festival 2021: Day 6

Friday of Homegrown Week saw another night of live performances at Earth Rider Brewery festival grounds for their Starfire Unofficial Birthday Bash, and it was Duluth Homegrown Music Festival founder Scott “Starfire” Lunt’s actual birthday, which made everything even more festive. If it seemed as if more people than usual were clad in flannel, blame item #31 from the Unofficial Homegrown Scavenger Hunt task list, “Flannel Day!” The hunt continues through Sunday at 4pm.
The food truck of the day, Oasis del Norte, was on hand and the sun was shining as Kyle Ollah started the evening off with his rootsy folk trio, featuring Clancy Ward on fiddle and Jen Krussow on upright bass. Meanwhile, inside the Cedar Lounge, Ingeborg van Aggasiz was performing for her regular Friday residency, sharing a mix of originals and covers of tunes including Bob Dylan’s “Abandoned Love” and The Replacements’ “Swingin’ Party.” ....

Homegrown Music Festival 2021: Day 4

In recent years the mid-point of the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival was dubbed “Westside Wednesday,” with music lovers fanning out to venues from Lincoln Park to West Duluth. This year, Soup Town night came early as Earth Rider Brewery in Superior kicked off their in-person series of shows dubbed “Starfire Unofficial Birthday Bash” that will continue through Saturday of Homegrown Week.

The evening’s festivities began at 5pm, with Black River Revue playing under Earthrider’s giant tent. Fans trickled onto the grounds throughout the evening, with a reasonably-sized crowd gathered by the time of Charlie Parr’s closing set. Whether inside the tent or outside on the grounds near one of the fires needed on a chilly May evening, fans still had space to spread out as needed. It didn’t quite feel back to normal, but it was obvious that vaccinations are making folks ....

Homegrown Music Festival 2021: Day 2


The Monday of the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival traditionally features the Ancillary Arts: poetry, photography, and video.

Music was the main event, however, at the first event of the evening, another set of live-streamed performances from 2104. Grains of Stars opened the evening, with Kristy Marie and Charlie Parr seated barefoot on the floor, creating droning soundscapes on harmonium and steel guitar for a small in-person audience and the internet.
Singer/songwriter Cory Coffman was next, making his second Homegrown appearance of the week. He performed songs from his debut album
Canvas and Color with playful banter from the audience between songs. One audience member was polling people in person and on the livestream as to what their one survival item would be if they were on TV s ....
