[email protected] The Minot City Council advanced the purchase of a building for a career and technical education center in approving a development agreement with the Minot State University Foundation Monday. The agreement provides for transfer of a previously approved $800,000 MAGIC Fund grant to the foundation to buy the Trinity Health building at 120 E. Burdick Expressway. The city has $3.5 million in National Disaster Resilience grant dollars for remodeling, equipping and staffing the building. “We need technical education in this community. We need to improve on our workforce in that area, and so I’m delighted to see this moving forward,” council member Mark Jantzer said. ....
[email protected] More outdoor dining could become available this summer with the Minot City Council’s approval Monday of a streeteries and parklets policy. Streeteries and parklets are platforms with fencing on three sides that extend from a downtown sidewalk’s curb into a parallel parking space in front of the owner’s property. Both allow for outdoor seating, and streeteries also allow for dining. The platforms can be in place from April 15 to Oct. 15. Jonathan Rosenthal, economic developer for the City of Minot, said the concept has been used across the country, including in Grand Forks. Two Minot businesses and possibly a third are planning streeteries this summer if approved by the city, he said. ....
[email protected] The language in an agreement with the Minot Area Chamber EDC was a subject of debate for members of the Minot City Council Monday. The council voted 5-2 to approve a professional services agreement with MACEDC that will provide the economic development organization with an additional $246,375 for the remainder of the year. In January, the council had approved a three-month agreement for $82,125 as a temporary measure while MACEDC completed its organizational phase. The Minot Area Chamber of Commerce and Minot Area Development Corp. merged in January. MACEDC also receives economic development funding from Ward County and member investors. Executive Director John MacMartin said the investor pool diminished somewhat last year due to COVID-19. ....
