Government and private sector launch fund to fight gender-based violence and femicide, with R70 million already raised.
Private companies have pledged at least R70 million rand to launch a Gender-Based Violence response fund. Their pledge fulfils “promise made to the women and children of this country,” President Cyril Ramaphosa said.
The president launched the Private Sector Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Response Fund virtually in Gauteng. The president specifically acknowledged contributions of R30 million Anglo-American, R20 million by banking group ABSA and R20 million by Ford Motor Company. ....

Breaking News - First Covid-19 vaccines arrive in South Africa

South Africa’s first consignment of the AstraZeneca vaccine has arrived in the country with President Cyril Ramaphosa on hand.
The vital first million doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine have arrived in South Africa and been offloaded at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport.
President Cyril Ramaphosa and Deputy President David Mabuza, who chairs the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Vaccines, were on hand to receive the consignment in pouring rain.
The first shipment of one million doses of the Oxford University-AstraZeneca vaccine from the Serum Institute of India (SII) left the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on Sunday. ....

Health Department plays catch-up as infants miss polio vaccines


Earlier this month
Health-e News reported how a Limpopo mother had visited at least four clinics to try and get her  baby inoculated against polio and other diseases.
Now the provincial department has acknowledged there have been issues.
“The shortage was caused by the fact that suppliers have been struggling to access the vaccines in the market due to Covid-19 inconveniences,” the department said in a media statement.
To address the backlog, the department announced it has secured a supply of vaccines, which will be delivered to health facilities by the by the end of January. Workers at clinics will then embark on a catch-up programme, vaccinating children who have already missed their doses. ....

On-again, off-again school nutrition programme set to restart by end January but governing bodies are in the dark.
The Department of Education is set to resume the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) in the last week of January 2021, even if learners are not yet back in class.
Yet, a member of the National Association of School Governing Bodies representatives  in Limpopo says the plan has not been communicated to them a sign of the miscommunication that has plagued the implementation of the feeding scheme. ....

On 1 February, Gauteng’s healthcare workers will be first to receive the Covid-19 vaccine. But, as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech to world leaders shows, securing vaccines for the rest of the country is ongoing.
