Longtime Saugus Selectmen Clerk Reed passes away

The community is mourning the loss of Wendy Reed, the longtime clerk for the Board of Selectmen, former School Committee member and director of the Saugus United Parish Food Pantry who died on Friday.
Reed, 57, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 5 at MelroseWakefield Hospital.
Town officials praised Reed for her dedication to helping families in need, whether as the food pantry director or through her advocacy to assist the homeless population with Healing Abuse Working for Change.
School Committee member Dennis Gould remembered Reed for her passion to help others.
“Wendy was a kind and giving person,” Gould said. “She always gave of herself willingly and not for awards or recognition, but truly to assist others. News that domestic violence murders in Massachusetts are down threatens to overshadow the fact that there is a deepening domestic abuse crisis in the state and across the country. As the COVID-19 pandemic stretches into 2021, more must be done to help victims escape dangerous situations. One way is to make it easier for victims to file abuse reports or talk to emergency workers online.
There were seven homicides attributed to domestic violence last year, according to a new report by the state’s Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team. That’s down from 28 murders in 2019, and 15 the year before. While the authors of the report note there is “no research to explain the significant decrease,” local advocates note the coronavirus pandemic has cut off many victims from friends, family and professional help. ....

Postal Employees Will Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Post Offices across the Commonwealth will be closed on Monday, January 18, as our employees pause to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Street delivery on Monday will be limited to guaranteed overnight parcels and there will be no collection of mail.
Full retail and delivery operations will resume on Tuesday, January 19.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
