Ten years ago, as radio presenter Joshua Simon was about to share a photo and a video on Facebook, he felt nervous. The images were of him, his friends and hordes of other people enjoying the 2011 edition of Singapore s Pink Dot rally, a celebration of the city state s LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.
Since its inception in 2009 the rally has drawn thousands of supporters and sponsorship from tech giants Google and Facebook, despite gay sex being technically illegal in the country. Under Singapore law (albeit one the government has said it will not enforce), gay sex between men is punishable with a jail term of up to two years.
Terrorism & Disaster Coalition for Child & Family Resilience – Gulf Coast Coalition
Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center received funding to establish the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative – Category II Treatment and Service Adaptation Center. The Center, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration established the Terrorism and Disaster Coalition for Child and Family Resilience program. The first project of the program was the Gulf Coast Coalition, established in 2017, comprised of representatives from state agencies in the states along the Gulf of Mexico: Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. Subsequently, the Northeast Coalition was established (Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York). The final coalitions to be established will be the Midwestern U.S. Coalition and the West Coast Coalition.
Social workers in the family resilience and safeguarding department will work in assessment teams or family safeguarding teams.
Assessment teams use motivational approaches, such as motivational interviewing, to engage with both the family and the network supporting them. They work to understand the presenting worries and determine whether a statutory social work service is required.
The family safeguarding teams use the family safeguarding model, first developed in Hertfordshire. Specialist support workers such as those working in drug and alcohol misuse, domestic violence and mental health are embedded within the children’s services department. They are available for advice or to co-work cases with children’s social workers.
