This year’s Fourth of July is likely to be all the more celebratory for so many now-vaccinated Americans, who will once again mark the holiday with family cookouts and beach-going with friends and fireworks.
And millions of us, having gotten our shots, are more than ready to mark an official summer “reopening.”
All the same, and not to sound like a scold, but we had better remember: There’s still plenty of work ahead to put the pandemic fully behind us.

[EDITORIAL] In Remap, Democrats Live Down To Expectations

For all of the outrage and outcry since Illinois Democrats unveiled their proposed legislative district maps late Friday night, let’s be honest: no one was expecting anything different. Republicans who are decrying the timing, the process, and the results of the remap effort knew all along how this would play out, as did everyone else watching the process. We’ve all seen this movie before.
But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t still bemoan the lost opportunity to really set a new standard for fairness in this decennial process. Democrats did have a chance to say that creating maps for the benefit of voters, not politicians, was truly their top priority. But saying that left too much up to chance, and so the Democrats went with the method which they have used here for decades – and which Republicans have used in the states where they control the process (and, let’s be honest, would have almost certainly have use ....

Central Illinois counties don't get their money's worth from state housing program, says Tazewell County Clerk

TAZEWELL COUNTY (HOI) - An audit of the Illinois Housing Authority shows hundreds of thousands of dollars missing from several counties.
A group of 10 Central Illinois clerks including Tazewell County s John Ackerman are expressing concerns with the state s financial reporting.
The auditor general confirms county governments gave more to the state s Rental Housing Support Program than the housing authority reported receiving.
In McLean and Sangamon Counties, the difference totaled more than $400,000.
Currently, Downstate Illinois receives nothing from this program, virtually nothing. For example, Tazewell County received no grants for this program, said Ackerman.
He says a bill in the legislature asks counties to double their contributions to the housing program, which he says would be more than $300,000 a year. ....
