Spanish East Floridians in 1812: 'Get rid of the filibusters!'

The invasion of East Florida began March 10, 1812, when Georgian troops crossed the St. Mary s River into Spanish territory. U.S. President James Madison had approved the plan. But the actions soon became unpopular with the American public and Madison reversed his position and withdrew support for the filibusters in East Florida. The filibusters did not withdraw and became their own little army.
James Burkholder Smith published his book The Plot to Steal Florida: President Madison s Phony War in 1983 about the 1812 invasion. Smith spent 23 years with the CIA and saw the plan to annex East Florida as setting a precedent for a number of 20th-century wars, including Vietnam. ....

French claims to the Mississippi watershed and the central Gulf Coast dated to the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries when French explorers descended the Mississippi from the Great Lakes and French officials established Biloxi (1699), Mobile (1702), and New Orleans (1718). These new towns and their surrounding settlements grew slowly, but their place in French aspirations was immense. New Orleans was to be the southern counterpart to Quebec and Montreal, providing the same commercial and governmental functions for Louisiana the whole of the Mississippi watershed that those cities provided for New France the whole of the St. Lawrence watershed. In the 1740s and 1750s, France began building new forts and trading posts hundreds of miles north of the Gulf of Mexico to strengthen the connections between its colonies and to secure its claims against the British colonies along the Atlantic Coast. ....

Today s column is offered in recognition of service to our community by former mayor George Gardner. His community endeavors stretched on either side of his four years as mayor from 2002 to 2006 indeed until the time of his death earlier this week on April 6.

St. Augustine appears in documents from its earliest days as the city of St. Augustine, but that did not include a municipal government. Florida (later East Florida) was a military colony headed by a governor who was a military officer. The governor also oversaw the city of St. Augustine. ....

Tallahassee s Trinity United Methodist Church on Park Avenue is already preparing for it s 200th anniversary in 2024.
Just before Easter on April 1, Trinity’s Historical Society erected a State of Florida historic marker in front of the church with the cooperation of the Secretary of State.
It gives a brief history of the church, its outreach and service to citizens of the City of Tallahassee, and its assistance to its Black members to start their own church following the end of the Civil War.
In 1821 Tallahassee was a wild frontier with about 2,000 citizens, half of whom were enslaved people. There were a few rustic commercial buildings and dirt roads just wide enough for bloody duels to take place. ....
