February 28 - 2021 GENEVA Arab tribesmen blocking a bridge in El Geneina in protest against the West Darfur govt (File photo: Social media) A surge in inter-communal attacks in West, South and North Darfur states last month forced more people to flee their homes in three days than in the whole of 2020 in Sudan, and the numbers continue to rise, according to a report published last week by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) based in Geneva, Switzerland. The report refers to the violence that erupted – as extensively reported by Radio Dabanga – between armed militias from the Massalit and Arab communities between 15 and 18 January, triggering about 183,000 new displacements. Most took place in El Geneina in West Darfur, but displacement was also recorded in Gireida and East Jebel Marra in South Darfur and Tawila in North Darfur. ....

Around 60 per cent of those displaced are under 18. Displacement sites are overcrowded and people are reported to be sleeping under trees. February 3 - 2021 TAWILA / KUTUM / EAST JEBEL MARRA A torched village near El Fasher, North Darfur, in April 2020 (RD correspondent) Gunmen driving vehicles and riding motorcycles, horses and camels have killed 14 people, wounded eight, burned 11 villages, looted mills, and have stolen 15,000 head of cattle in Tawila locality, North Darfur, in the last 10 days, community leader from North Darfur Abdallah El Tajani said at a press conference in Nyala yesterday. Not all the dead have yet been buried, El Tajani said. He stated that the villages in Tawila locality “have been under constant attack”. Abdallah El Tijani said that the violent attacks have caused the complete displacement of 11 villages. Some 15,000 displaced people are now staying in other areas, including Katur, Shangil Tobaya Camp and Zamzam Camp south of the North Darfur capital El Fasher. February 2 - 2021 TAWILA / GENEVA The Peace Shield Forces will consist of RSF troops (SUNA) On Sunday, one person was killed, another wounded, and three kidnapped in two separate attacks in Tawila locality, North Darfur. The North Darfur State Security Committee will deploy the Peace Shield Forces in certain localities to deal with the lack of security. Experts from the UN Human Rights Council called on the Sudanese government to take urgent action to protect civilians in Darfur. Witness Hasan Adam told Radio Dabanga that gunmen with cars and camels attacked the village of Barakarou in Tawila, injuring Mohieldin Suleiman (42) and kidnapping Yusef Hamid (18), Yahya Idris (22), and Abdelbaqi Hamed (30).
