Violent protests and looting in Darfur

Violent protest in Nyala yesterday (Social media)
A large number of shops in Nyala, capital of South Darfur, have been damaged as a result of violence and looting yesterday. People in Nyala told Radio Dabanga that shop owners expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of police protection.
Two police vehicles were burnt and the front of the Bank of Sudan was smashed during the violence.
The governor of South Darfur, Mousa Mahdi, declared the state of emergency and a curfew in the city of Nyala, starting from Tuesday at 18.00. The curfew will last 48 hours. ....

Peace Shield Forces also deployed in North Darfur as attacks continue

On Sunday, one person was killed, another wounded, and three kidnapped in two separate attacks in Tawila locality, North Darfur. The North Darfur State Security Committee will deploy the Peace Shield Forces in certain localities to deal with the lack of security. Experts from the UN Human Rights Council called on the Sudanese government to take urgent action to protect civilians in Darfur.
Witness Hasan Adam told Radio Dabanga that gunmen with cars and camels attacked the village of Barakarou in Tawila, injuring Mohieldin Suleiman (42) and kidnapping Yusef Hamid (18), Yahya Idris (22), and Abdelbaqi Hamed (30). They were forced into a vehicle at gunpoint and taken to an unknown location. ....

Bread protests across Sudan gain momentum

Students in North Darfur and River Nile state took to the streets yesterday to protest against recent price increases in consumer goods and subsidised bread shortages.
Hundreds of secondary school students in El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, participated in demonstrations to denounce the deteriorating economic conditions in the state and the complete absence of subsidised bread.
Chanting “we want bread”, they marched to the state government offices, where Governor Mohamed Arabi addressed them. He pledged to solve the bread problem. ....

Sudan Boko Haram vehicles to be licensed

Sudanese who own unlicensed vehicles
(popularly called Boko Haram)
can legalise their cars within the coming two months.
Illegal vehicles found after this period will be confiscated, technical coordinator and spokesmen for the High Committee for the Collection of Weapons and Unlicensed Vehicles Maj Gen Abdelhadi Osman said in a press statement on Monday.
He added that the confiscations will be applied “strictly and severely”. Maj Gen Osman also pointed out that the borders will be controlled carefully by the regular forces during this two-month period.
Tthe first 15 days of the two-month period, from January 1 until January 15, will be devoted to register and inventory the vehicles. The vehicles will be legalised and licensed in the period from January 16 until March 1. ....
