Man allegedly punched police officer at Killeen Mall

A Killeen man allegedly punched a Killeen police officer in the eye at the Killeen Mall while he was being placed under arrest Wednesday.
Joe Hartfield, 33, of Killeen, was booked into the Bell County Jail Friday on a charge of assault of a public servant.
According to an arrest affidavit, Killeen police was dispatched to the Killeen Mall Wednesday in reference to a disturbance involving an individual refusing to leave the mall.
Upon arrival, a police officer âobserved Hartfield acting erratically and refusing to leave the location after Killeen Mall security asked him to leave several times,â according to the affidavit. ....

The other contenders to emerge from an initial field of 39 applicants are Clinton Nichols, chief of police in Commerce City, Colorado, and Joseph Sullivan, a retired deputy commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department.

Their backgrounds are very different, and all bring certain qualifications that make them attractive. Medina is a longtime veteran of the Albuquerque Police Department. He knows the ropes. Nichols was a commander in Las Vegas, Nev., and in Commerce City with a force of about 140 employees he developed a five-year strategic plan in anticipation of reform efforts – important given APD’s struggles with complying with the ongoing reform process here overseen by a monitor and federal judge. City selects three finalists for next APD chief

The city has narrowed its choice to be the next chief of the Albuquerque Police Department to three candidates, including interim chief Harold Medina.
The other two are Clinton Nichols, chief of police in Commerce City, Colorado, and Joseph Sullivan, a retired deputy commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department, according to a city spokeswoman.

City leaders, with consultant Herb Crosby, have conducted 40 meetings with community groups and collected nearly 2,300 responses to an online survey in order to get a sense for what characteristics they should look for in hiring the next chief. As of late December, 39 people had applied for the position, at least 25 of whom were determined to be qualified. ....

When James Dobson was let go as police chief of Opa-locka, Florida – a small city of 16,000 in Miami-Dade County – it was because of high crime rates and his lack of progress in turning around a troubled department, according to an article in the Miami Herald.
Four months later, he was one of the applicants to be the next chief of the Albuquerque Police Department – as is the man who fired him, Opa-locka City Manager John Pate.
Pate and Dobson were two of 39 candidates who had applied to be the city’s next top cop. When reached by phone Thursday, Dobson said he removed his name from consideration earlier this week because the move would be too much for his family. ....
