The Corner Beet Relaunches Open Mic Nights

Regulars are excited about the returning event, Barabadze says; someone even shared the Facebook event before he himself had the chance to invite guests. One man wrote in the comment section: “Is this real life? Is this actually happening?” Another joked that she was going to camp outside the cafe to get a spot on the list. Barabadze knows there’s a possibility that not everyone is going to be able to perform, and he ll have to see how many come out in order to decide what shape the event will take going forward.
At a typical open mic, artists pick a time to perform on a sign-up sheet that sets the pace for the night. Most evenings, musicians are allowed to play two songs or read spoken-word poetry for a ten-minute period. The stage provides a platform for beginners, old-timers, hobbyists and professionals to practice new tunes or share well-practiced favorites. ....

These Denver Chefs Have Missed Cooking for an Audience

Amy and Dustin Barrett, owners of Tables in Park Hill, say that kitchen staffers were cheering when they were able to start plating food again. The dining experience for customers just wasn’t the same with meals packed away in boxes and delivered outside closed doors. It was, of course, a survival necessity, and even now, they’re grateful to provide takeaway for those who want it. But greater indoor dining capacity is bringing the Barretts one step closer to the true dynamic of their restaurant: an interactive experience between food and setting, staff, chef and customer.
Sitting down to dine is like taking a seat at a Broadway play, Amy Barrett says. It’s a show in its own right, where the guest’s reaction informs and inspires the kitchen. A year after the pandemic first forced Colorado restaurants to close to on-premises dining, many in the industry are looking forward to regaining a degree of normalcy, where they can see the fruits of their labor reflected in the f ....

The Cat Club Gives Adults the Chance to Play Dress Up at Private Parties

In a glamorous room at the Dairy Block, there s a place for women to play with their own definitions of self by dressing up. The Cat Club invites women to immerse themselves in imagination. Inside the doors, they are no longer contained by any role or responsibility. Rather than the many metaphorical hats they wear, they can choose, instead, to wear a tiara or a Stetson. They can be any version of themselves: They can be anyone at all.
The Cat Club, at 1855 Blake Street, is a private event space for a girls night out. It includes a 36-foot runway and a dress-up closet filled with dazzling items of clothing. The club is an expansion of Blue Ruby Boutique, run by longtime Denver retailer Julie Watson. She says she was inspired to create the space after seeing so many customers want to model the clothes in her store for their friends and companions. The Cat Club is a space where women are meant to feel empowered and embrace their beauty. ....

Bibamba Chocolate Is a Denver Business With Roots in Cameroon

Bibamba means patch in Lingala (a language of central Africa), like something you would use to fix a hole in your pants. It’s a metaphor for a snack, something that will hold you over between meals, says Patrick Tcheunou, who owns a new chocolate company called Bibamba with his wife, Mara. But while Bibamba artisan dark chocolate can make a great snack, there’s more than a plateful of intention behind each bag.
In 2015, the Tcheunous bought two farms in Patrick’s home country of Cameroon to grow cacao and coffee beans in a sustainable manner that could also benefit the surrounding communities. Last year was their first cacao harvest, but their shipment of 1,400 pounds of beans landed in the U.S. right at the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown. They soon decided that the company was going to need to expand from supplying cacao to making its own chocolate product if they wanted the beans to be used. But now they see Bibamba s three signature chocolate barks as only t ....

Swallow Hill Hootenannies Find New Life Online

“Oh, Lord, I ve got some singing to do,” Joe Hickerson croons comfortably, without instrumentation, from his kitchen table.
The fridge behind him is covered with photos and magnets, and he peers into his computer’s video camera toward an online audience of about seventy people attending a recent Friday night Old-Fashioned Hootenanny hosted by Swallow Hill Music over Zoom. He pauses to explain how he learned Oh, Lord, I ve Got Some Singing to Do in 1957, during his days at Oberlin College.
He and the others gathering online for Swallow Hill s hootenannies are carrying on a tradition that began in 1962 at Harry Tuft’s Denver Folklore Center. Along with selling guitars, Tuft created a meeting ground for the folk-enthused that’s outlasted nearly six decades of changing venues and business iterations with only the latest hootenannies taking place online. But despite the newfangled setup, sincerity shines through as musicians and students gather to share what ....
