At its May 4 meeting the Gila County Board of Supervisors gladly approved an amendment to its intergovernmental agreement with the Arizona Department of Health Services to increase the stateâs grant award by $300,762 for immunization services to enhance COVID-19 activities and vaccination efforts. With this latest infusion of money to fight COVID-19, the Gila County Health and Emergency Management Department has received $5.4 million from the ADHS and Centers for Disease Control, said Michael OâDriscoll, director of the health department. The funds must be used to provide vaccines, contact tracing and surveillance, he said. OâDriscoll told the supervisors his department is having difficulty in finding people to fill the extra positions the grant awards have made possible. âWe are looking into seeing if we can contract out some of these jobs,â he said. ....

The county has resumed administering the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine. A COVID-19 vaccine clinic will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, May 4 at the Teen Center, 112 W. Cedar Lane, Payson. Use of the single-dose vaccine resumed last week after the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determination that the vaccine is safe and effective. Regarding the ADHS statement âboth federal agencies had paused the Johnson and Johnson vaccine due to six reported U.S. cases, of a rare and severe type of blood clot that developed in these individuals. The CDC and FDA, have determined that the available data suggest the chance of this reaction is very low, both agencies will remain vigilant in investigating the risks associated with this rare condition.â ....

Last week, fire and emergency officials told the council just how bad this season is and then explained how the town would respond in a catastrophic fire â and residents play a critical role. Payson Fire Chief David Staub emceed the presentation. âIf you take the Town of Payson with 19 square miles, with the roads and infrastructure, we donât really have anything wide enough in our ecosystem to stop the fire in an extreme fire,â he said.
