Johson & Johnson vaccines resume in Gila County

The county has resumed administering the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine.
A COVID-19 vaccine clinic will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, May 4 at the Teen Center, 112 W. Cedar Lane, Payson.
Call 928-910-4009 to schedule an appointment. The clinic is sponsored by Gila County Health and Emergency Management’s immunization team.
Use of the single-dose vaccine resumed last week after the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determination that the vaccine is safe and effective.
Regarding the ADHS statement “both federal agencies had paused the Johnson and Johnson vaccine due to six reported U.S. cases, of a rare and severe type of blood clot that developed in these individuals. The CDC and FDA, have determined that the available data suggest the chance of this reaction is very low, both agencies will remain vigilant in investigating the risks associated with this rare condition.” ....

As variants spread, the new battleground for COVID is schools

Health officials hope schools will maintain CDC guidelines even though the governor has rescinded the statewide school mask mandate order.
Public health officials worry unvaccinated students can still spur new cases, especially with the rise of some new strains of the virus that might prove more dangerous to children than the current, dominant strains.
However, Payson schools have already made the wearing of masks on campus optional, according to PUSD Superintendent Linda Gibson.
Gibson said the district still “supports” students, faculty or staff who want to wear masks, however, and will continue to make masks available on campus.
“The only thing changing is there is no longer a mandated requirement,” she said in an email. ....

Fire season is here; don't put off making an emergency kit | Local News

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, experts said the best defense was to hunker down as much as possible.
Now the fire season is upon Rim Country — and throughout Arizona — forced evacuation from those COVID-19 sanctuaries could become reality.
The ReadyGila.com site on the Gila County Health and Emergency Management website offers guidance about what residents need to have in their “Ready Kits” if forced to evacuate.
Ready Kits should address the needs of three days’ sustenance for all members of the household, as well as pets. Plan also for any dependent relatives, elderly or special-needs neighbors.
The Arizona climate poses special considerations, and seasonal changes can affect what is needed. ....

Gila County COVID vaccine rate plummets

Gila County has hit the wall with people seeking a COVID-19 vaccine.
Last week, the county health department had so few people signed up for a shot that it gave 2,100 vaccines to other counties with more need.
“We kept 500 (vaccines),” said Josh Beck, Gila County’s lead for the pandemic response.
If the pace of new vaccinations slows to 500 a week, it will take the county almost a year to get everyone vaccinated.
The county remains well below the “herd immunity” needed to keep a fresh surge of the virus from adding to the already sobering death toll.
Disease experts say only getting at least 80% of the population vaccinated will prevent the continued spread of the virus. With waning interest in masks and social distancing, reaching herd immunity has more importance than ever. ....

County pausing Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines

The Gila County Health and Emergency Management Department is pausing all its Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
According to the health department, the decision was made “In light of the recent press release from the CDC. - We are following the recommendations released to us by both the CDC and the Arizona Department of Health Services.”
“As of April 12, more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine have been administered in the U.S. CDC and FDA are reviewing data involving six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine. In these cases, a type of blood clot called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) was seen in combination with low levels of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia). All six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination, according to a joint statement from Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy direct ....
