Joe Courtney announced Friday that $700,000 has been included in a round of congressional bills for a new computer-aided emergency dispatch system. Norwich police Chief Patrick Daley said he submitted the request to Courtney’s office when the congressman sought funding priority needs from municipalities in the 2nd Congressional District. Courtney announced Friday the funding was included in bills approved Thursday night by the House Appropriations Committee. The fire services study presented to the City Council in February urged upgrades to the emergency fire dispatch and fire radios and communications equipment. Daley said the emergency dispatch computer system is a key component of the upgrade. The city’s current dispatch computer system was installed in 2003 ....
Groton One year after it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of residents and visitors lined both sides of Route 1 on Sunday for the town s Fourth of July parade, reviving an annual tradition. The parade, which started at Poquonnock Plains Park and ended near the post office, was one of several in the region celebrating the Fourth of July. Crowds also flocked to Stonington and Lyme on Sunday for holiday festivities. Groton City Mayor Keith Hedrick, excited to see the people alongside the road, said there was nothing more normal than motherhood, apple pie and a Fourth of July parade. ....

Waterford Resident Hilary Baude said donating a kidney was the easiest decision she ever made. Baude, a kindergarten teacher at Mary Morrisson Elementary School in Groton, was watching the news on New Year’s Eve when she saw a segment about CBS Executive Marc Weiner’s search for a kidney donation. As she watched, she said she connected with Weiner’s story. Baude and her family had experienced their own struggles when their oldest daughter, now 8, was born prematurely at 2 pounds, 3 ounces. Her daughter spent time in a neonatal intensive care unit and had open heart surgery at five months old. Later, the family experienced another struggle when her husband was diagnosed with cancer. ....
