The Association of Students of the University of Nebraska has internally elected Christine Trinh as its next speaker of the senate for the 2021-22 administration.Â
Trinh, an Asian American woman and a sophomore economics and political science double major, joins an already diverse elected executive team, led by President Batool Ibrahim, ASUNâs first Black president, internal Vice President Taylor Jarvis, an openly bisexual woman, and external Vice President Patrick Baker.Â
âIt is so cool seeing representation happen right in front of you,â Trinh said.
The new speaker is breaking barriers herself. Trinh is the first woman to assume the role of speaker since the 2012-13 ASUN administration, and she breaks a streak of eight white men who have served in the position during the same time period, according to a text from Drew Harrahill, ASUNâs 2020-21 internal vice president.
The senate also conducted internal elections for the speaker of the senate and Appointments Board chair.Â
Sen. Christine Trinh won a narrow election and will serve as the speaker of the senate for the 2021-22 administration. Trinh said in a nomination speech that she will work with senators on legislation and help them amplify their voices.Â
âAs speaker, I would make it my mission not only to work with senators on legislation but to amplify their voice and ensure their presence and time in ASUN is worthwhile,â Trinh said.Â
Sen. Zoe Keese won election to be Appointments Board chair.Â
ASUN will allocate up to $4,250 from the Green Fund budget to the Student Organic Farm, after passing Government Bill 1.Â
The Association of Students of the University of Nebraska 2021-22 senate will meet for its first full meeting Wednesday in what will also be the final meeting of the 2020-21 academic year.Â
President Batool Ibrahim, internal Vice President Taylor Jarvis and external Vice President Patrick Baker will all give their first executive reports.Â
Government Bill 1 will be presented. If this bill passes, ASUN will allocate up to $4250 from the Green Fund budget to the Student Organic Farm.
Additionally, the bill would also require the leaders of the farm to give a report to the senate body following the completion of the project.Â

Party: Revitalize
Year(s) in ASUN: ThreeÂ
Reason for Running: âSustainability has been a pillar in which ASUN parties have run on for years, but beyond a few ideas here or there, very few initiatives have been truly accomplished. This year was my first year as an ASUN senator and within a few short months, I was able to change the bylaws to make every ASUN sponsored event zero-waste and every ASUN-sponsored travel carbon neutral. I want to do more and make UNL more environmentally sustainable. I decided to run to advance sustainability at UNL through legislation and communication.â Â
