View Comments This year s deadline for paying personal income tax is Monday, May 17 and there are late fees if you miss that deadline. Even Vermonters who apply for an extension to send in documents must pay what they owe by May 17, according to a reminder this week from the Vermont Department of Taxes. Challenges related to COVID led federal and state authorities earlier this year to extend the tax deadline to a month after its accustomed mid-April date. We know that Vermonters are focused on getting vaccinated so filing taxes may not be at the forefront of everyone s mind, wrote Craig Bolio, the state s tax commissioner, in a news release. ....
Childcare bill becoming a heavy lift The House Committee on Human Services is working through H.171, a bill that would create a comprehensive child care system governed and subsidized by the state. The system would take several years to establish. The work began in earnest last year. There are two critical studies in the bill. The first is the creation of an Early Care and Education Systems and Administration Advisory Committee which would ultimately advise relevant state agencies regarding the delivery of appropriate services. This 20-member committee would include representatives of three business-related representatives: the Vermont Business Roundtable, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, and Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility. ....
Vermont Senate to vote on exempting feminine hygiene products from sales tax Modified: 2/25/2021 10:15:36 PM MONTPELIER A bill that would exempt feminine hygiene products from Vermont’s sales tax has been sent to the Senate floor for a vote. The bill, SB 53, would lift the sales tax from products including tampons, panty liners, menstrual cups and similar products “designed for feminine hygiene in connection with the human menstrual cycle,” it reads. The Senate Finance Committee voted, 7-0, Wednesday to recommend passage. Feminine hygiene products are currently subject to Vermont’s 6% sales tax, with an additional 1% local option tax in some communities. State law currently exempts other medical supplies, such as adult diapers and bandages, from the tax. ....

MONTPELIER â The state House of Representativesâ two financial oversight committees on Tuesday supported a language change that will allow the state Tax Department to share data with the Department of Labor to make sure corrected tax forms being sent to some unemployment claimants are, in fact, correct. But members of the House Appropriations and Ways & Means committees also sought assurances the error that resulted in thousands of incorrect 1099-G forms being sent to the wrong address â including othersâ personally identifiable information â wonât happen again. The language is being attached to the annual Budget Adjustment Act, which has already passed both the House and Senate. That bill is due to be taken up for a concurrence vote by the House on Wednesday. ....
Don t miss the big stories. Like us on Facebook. Â Our next elections in Vermont are the town meeting votes for municipal and education budgets. Municipal budgets are usually not a problem. Most select boards are careful, if not frugal, spenders. Their budgets routinely pass without much discussion. Education budgets also generally are approved routinely. This is the year that this habit absolutely must change. Vermontâs economy is in dire straits. The local education budgets must be scrutinized and challenged before they are approved. On Dec. 1 Vermont Tax Commissioner Craig Bolio, in a letter to be sent to the Legislature, projected a 9 percent rise in education property taxes next year. The âeducation property taxesâ are all local. ....
