NEW BEDFORD – Art will be overwhelming the SouthCoast starting May 7. A ten-day artistic adventure, connecting communities from Fall River to Wareham, will be a reminder that art is still thriving amid the pandemic and maybe ignite future artists. “I hope we can inspire people to experiment with their creativity,” said Jodi Stevens, executive director of the Marion Art Center. Stevens teamed with Anthi Frangiadi, owner of The Drawing Room and Lee Heald, the director of AHA! New Bedford, to create this inspiring artistic tour. “I hope that people will realize that there are still ways to enjoy the art, even during what we re experiencing now,” Stevens said. ....
Queensland Launches Indigenous Treaty Talks Consultations on Queensland’s proposed treaty with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made steady progress in Cairns, significantly raising the profile of Queensland’s ongoing Path to Treaty work. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Craig Crawford and the newly-appointed Treaty Advancement Committee had consultations in Cairns on Thursday. The committee is charged with developing options and giving independent advice in what the government says is a vital role on its path to a treaty. Crawford has previously said the state is also committed to a “truth-telling and healing” process. The TAC is co-chaired by Bidjara/Birri Gubba Juru woman Jackie Huggins and Ghungalu man Mick Gooda. ....
JOINT STATEMENT Queensland’s Path to Treaty takes another step forward as the Treaty Advancement Committee meets in Cairns today to continue shaping the historic Treaty-making process with First Nations people. Co-Chair Dr Jackie Huggins and Committee members Dr Josephine Bourne, Professor Michael Lavarch and Dr Sallyanne Atkinson are meeting with community members in Cairns to discuss the outcomes of the Path to Treaty Report and discuss the next steps towards Treaty in Queensland. Hamermesh, a professor of economics at the University of Texas, Austin, author of “Beauty Pays,” published this month, wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times about the need for affirmative action rules for ugly people. It is an implausible theory he can use to make money and get published in the NY Times. His article spans the usual platitudes about good looking people landing the better jobs, leaving the ugly out in the cold. I guess if he worked in some of the jobs I have, he’d have to re-write his article. There were plenty of ugly, nice, talented people who performed well in their jobs. ....
Redlynch father of two Mr Bhamaria, who has more than 20 years experience at sea, has now been nominated for the United Nations International Maritime Organisation Bravery Award, which recognises the world s most incredible rescue efforts at sea. He also recently took out India s National Maritime Day Gallantry Award and has been nominated for an Australian Bravery Award. It s a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for any seafarer, he said of the Gallantry Award. I had seven nominations in my favour, which is incredible. And since the inception of the award this is the first time in Indian history that a maritime pilot has won it. ....
