Queensland Launches Indigenous Treaty Talks
Consultations on Queensland’s proposed treaty with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made steady progress in Cairns, significantly raising the profile of Queensland’s ongoing Path to Treaty work.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Craig Crawford and the newly-appointed Treaty Advancement Committee had consultations in Cairns on Thursday.
The committee is charged with developing options and giving independent advice in what the government says is a vital role on its path to a treaty.
Crawford has previously said the state is also committed to a “truth-telling and healing” process.
The TAC is co-chaired by Bidjara/Birri Gubba Juru woman Jackie Huggins and Ghungalu man Mick Gooda. ....

JOINT STATEMENT
Queensland’s Path to Treaty takes another step forward as the Treaty Advancement Committee meets in Cairns today to continue shaping the historic Treaty-making process with First Nations people.
Co-Chair Dr Jackie Huggins and Committee members Dr Josephine Bourne, Professor Michael Lavarch and Dr Sallyanne Atkinson are meeting with community members in Cairns to discuss the outcomes of the Path to Treaty Report and discuss the next steps towards Treaty in Queensland.
Minister for Seniors, Disability Services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Craig Crawford said having members of the Committee in Cairns will significantly raise the profile of Queensland’s ongoing Path to Treaty work. ....

History has been made in Queensland with the very first meeting of newly-formed Parliamentary Friends of First Nations People.
This non-partisan group has been formed as a place to hold important and truthful conversations as everyone – no matter which side of politics they are from – can and should work together towards reconciliation and a prosperous future for all.

Queensland Treaty Advancement Committee members announced


JOINT STATEMENT
Queensland’s journey towards a new future between First Nation’s people and all Queenslanders has taken the next step with two Co-Chairs and members of Queensland’s first Treaty Advancement Committee formalised.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Treaty Advancement Committee would continue the momentum of the Path to Treaty process, develop options and provide independent advice on how to progress treaty-making for all Queenslanders.
“Queensland has achieved many great things but as part of that, we need to acknowledge the past,” the Premier said.
“Our story began more than 60,000 years ago with our First Nations Peoples. Path to Treaty is about acknowledging the past and plotting a way forward for a new future between First Nation’s peoples and all Queenslanders.” ....
