$34M in federal CDBG funds headed to 41 Massachusetts communities

The state announced Tuesday $34 million in federal CDBG, or Community Development Block Grant, funding for 41 communities from the Berkshires to Martha’s Vineyard.
The money can be used for local projects, including housing rehabilitation, small infrastructure projects, and for local social services like youth programming or food banks.
“Our administration is pleased to announce $34 million in federal funding to help 41 communities deliver vital services to residents and invest in local infrastructure,” said Gov. Charlie Baker in a prepared release. “These grants will help municipalities fill key budget gaps created by the pandemic, enabling them to advance critical long-term projects while continuing to support residents in the fight against COVID-19.” ....

10 Central Mass. communities receive $7M for housing, neighborhood aid


Nearly $7 million in state funding announced Tuesday will go toward neighborhood and housing improvements in 10 Central Massachusetts cities and towns.
Those funds are part of $34 million in funds the Baker Administration has doled out in Community Development Block Grants, funds originating with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In all, 41 communities statewide were given funds.
Central Massachusetts recipients include:
Athol: $800,000 for infrastructure improvements to the Walnut Street neighborhood.
Gardner: $825,000 for downtown infrastructure improvements, park improvements along Park Street, and social service assistance for youth, substance abuse and domestic violence prevention services.
Leicester: $335,200 for housing rehabilitation assistance to seven units and design work for handicapped accessibility improvements to Russell Memorial Park. ....

Amherst receives $825K, Easthampton $800K: Baker administration awards $34 million in grants to 41 Massachusetts communities

The Baker administration’s latest affordable housing grants will fund rehabilitation projects for more than 350 housing units and 17 infrastructure improvement projects, state officials say.
The funds will also cover the costs of resources for children, teenagers, domestic violence violence, homeless people and older residents through the $34 million in community development block grants issued to dozens of cities and towns, according to the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development.
“Despite the challenges of the last year, communities across the commonwealth have been leaders in the work to stop the spread of COVID-19 and support their downtowns and struggling residents,” Secretary Mike Kennealy said in a statement. “Today’s CDBG funding will help municipalities fill budget gaps for social service ....
