BeijingAustralia s ambassador to China was denied entry to a heavily guarded Beijing court on Thursday where the espionage case against Australian blogger Yang Hengjun will be heard at a time of worsening ties between the two nations. Graham Fletcher, Australia s ambassador to China, attempted to enter the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People s Court in line with a two-way consular pact. Unfortunately we have just been denied entry to the court. The reason given was because of the pandemic situation but the foreign ministry has also told us it is because it is a national security case therefore we are not permitted to attend it, Fletcher told reporters outside the court. ....
Australian writer pleads not guilty to espionage charges in China ANI | Updated: May 28, 2021 20:15 IST Beijing [China], May 28 (ANI): Former Chinese diplomat and Australian writer Yang Hengjun on Thursday pleaded not guilty to espionage charges in an over six-hour trial in Beijing, according to one of his lawyers. Yang, 56, defended himself and remained calm throughout the hearing in the Beijing Second Intermediate People s Court, the lawyer said, reported South China Morning Post (SCMP). [Yang] spoke throughout the process and gave long responses, sometimes for up to half an hour. He had a calm demeanour, said the lawyer, declining to give details of the case against Yang due to state secrets being involved. ....
Reuters Chinese-Australian writer Yang Hengjun could face a lengthy jail term following his trial behind closed doors for espionage in Beijing this week. Yang, 54, an outspoken Australian writer and political commentator who formerly held Chinese nationality, was detained on arrival at Guangzhou Airport on Jan. 19, 2019, then taken to Beijing by officers of the state security police. His trial took place behind closed doors at the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People s Court on Thursday, according to foreign affairs ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian. By law, this case wasn t open to the public because it involved state secrets, Zhao told reporters in Beijing on Thursday. This is entirely legal and reasonable. ....
