A senior Chinese diplomat in Canberra has admitted he has almost no information about the secretive trial of Australian writer Yang Hengjun.
Dr Yang is being tried for espionage in a closed court in Beijing.
But the former Chinese state security employee says he still has not been told which country he allegedly spied for, and has accused the Chinese government of persecuting him for championing democracy.

A senior Chinese diplomat in Canberra has admitted he has almost no information about the secretive trial of Australian writer Yang Hengjun.
Dr Yang is being tried for espionage in a closed court in Beijing.
But the former Chinese state security employee says he still has not been told which country he allegedly spied for, and has accused the Chinese government of persecuting him for championing democracy.
An Australian academic on trial in China for espionage has told supporters he has been tortured in detention and still does not know which country he is accused of spying for.
Chinese-born Yang Jun (楊軍) said he was mistreated while being held at a secret detention site after being taken into custody more than two years ago.
“The first six months. was a really bad period. They tortured me,” he said in a message seen by Agence France-Presse. “I’ve already been held in a place worse than prison for over two years now.”

Singapore: Australian writer Dr Yang Hengjun called for interrogations and video recordings taken of him while he was being tortured to be dismissed by a Beijing court, warning the testimony taken under duress would damage the legal standing of the Chinese government.
In a rare account of a closed-door trial in China’s opaque judicial system, Dr Yang said he pleaded with the judge ahead of his espionage trial to exclude interrogation records from the court proceedings.

“It’s illegal. Torture. They had hidden camera records. I will ask the Chinese government to provide the truth,” he said in a statement delivered to his supporters.
