Gravel pit off North Street can move ahead, planning board rules ELLSWORTH A 10-acre gravel pit off North Street found unanimous Planning Board approval on May 5, following a preliminary application review in April. The pit, which is planned as two pits an existing 1-acre pit enlarged to 2.3 acres and a second 7.5-acre pit was proposed by E. Skip Grindle, who operates a landscaping business at 485 North St. Approval is conditional on submission of all required state documents. Located in the rural and limited residential zones, the project’s preliminary review had raised questions on the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) permit for a new access road off North Street and the presence of vernal pools on the 45-acre site and water quality, as the site borders ....
This Tuesday, May 4 th, voters in Leroy Township will be asked to approve a new millage increase of 1.5 mills. That means if you have a $100,000 home, (assessed at $50,000) you’ll pay $75 per year or about $6 per month. Or, if you want to do your own math, 1.5 mills is $1.50 per $1,000 of your home’s taxable value. So what’s it for? The ballot language says it would pay for fire protection services, including dispatch fees, and for maintenance and operation of township cemeteries, as well as for maintenance and operation of the Graham Lake boat ramp and park operations. If approved, the increase will raise an estimated $226,500 in the first year the millage is levied. It would be levied for 10 years. ....

Proposed gravel pit near KidsPeace raises concerns ELLSWORTH Planning Board members at a sketch plan meeting on March 4 aired concerns over the proximity of a proposed 10-acre gravel pit to KidsPeace. Those concerns are based on the noise associated with an extraction operation and what effect it might have on the autism program in place at the residential school. KidsPeace is located off Patriot Road, and the proposed site on North Street abuts the school property. “Bear in mind that we’re constrained by the ordinances that we wind up working with,” Chairman John Fink said. “Some things that some of us would like to see are beyond our purview.” ....
