BELLEFONTE Beginning in 2021-22, Bellefonte Area School District will be known just as the Raiders. After months of debate that has divided a community, the school board voted 6-3 to drop the word “Red” from its official nickname during a special meeting on Wednesday. In order to move toward a logo that will not misrepresent or stereotype Native Americans, the board also moved to create a committee that will seek public input on a new graphical representation of the nickname “Raiders” that is not centered on any one group’s race, ethnicity or national origin. The committee will be comprised of representatives from the student body, community, teachers and administrators. The board asked that the committee submit its top three recommendations to the board by the first directors meeting in November. ....

For several months, the Red Raider mascot has been under fire by a handful of community members who view the district’s mascot and nickname as offensive. Tuesday’s 90-minute meeting gave the opportunity for each board member to voice their opinion. Board member Rodney Musser, who has spearheaded a potential mascot change, was the first to speak. “Recent emails dictate that I believe we need to have this discussion, regardless of the outcome,” Musser said, “because I believe the community is a bit confused as to what education is to all of our students. I don’t want to dive into details of the conversations, but at some point, I think we need to establish an end to the discussion … I believe the community needs to be educated.” ....
A measure to reduce military training accidents crafted in response to the death of a Bradenton soldier became law Friday with the passage of the defense policy bill. Congress on Friday overrode President Donald Trump’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act, a first by lawmakers since he took office nearly four years ago, ensuring that the measure becomes law, the Associated Press reported. In an extraordinary New Year’s Day session, the Republican-controlled Senate easily turned aside the veto, dismissing Trump’s objections to the $740 billion bill and handing him a stinging rebuke just weeks before he leaves the White House. ....
