Bellefonte Will Be Known as the Raiders, Board Votes to Drop 'Red' from Nickname

BELLEFONTE Beginning in 2021-22, Bellefonte Area School District will be known just as the Raiders. After months of debate that has divided a community, the school board voted 6-3 to drop the word “Red” from its official nickname during a special meeting on Wednesday.
In order to move toward a logo that will not misrepresent or stereotype Native Americans, the board also moved to create a committee that will seek public input on a new graphical representation of the nickname “Raiders” that is not centered on any one group’s race, ethnicity or national origin.
The committee will be comprised of representatives from the student body, community, teachers and administrators. The board asked that the committee submit its top three recommendations to the board by the first directors meeting in November. ....

Bellefonte residents came out in force on Saturday to show their support for the Red Raider nickname at the Centre County Courthouse.
BELLEFONTE With a critical school board vote looming on Tuesday, the Bellefonte community came together one more time in what appears to be a last-gasp effort to save the Red Raider nickname.
On Saturday afternoon, around 50 supporters rallied outside the Centre County Courthouse. There were current students, parents, residents, alumni and taxpayers in attendance. They wore T-shirts and sweatshirts with the words “Bellefonte Red Raiders” on them. Some wore Red Raider masks. There were plenty of signs both homemade and professionally printed in the crowd. Those who drove by on Bellefonte’s “Diamond” honked horns and gave the crowd a “thumbs up” out of their car windows. ....

An update to a story we have been following for weeks. Earlier this month, the Bellefonte School Board voted to remove the Red Raider logo, and the Community was not happy with the decision. Now, the Red Raider name is on the chopping block. In Bellefonte on Saturday, current Students and Graduates let their feelings towards keeping the name be known.
Alumni and Students alike lined the front of the Centre County Courthouse, attempting to show this name change is not what the community wants. A few dozen people showed up outside the Centre County Courthouse this afternoon to protest against removing the Red Raiders as Bellefonte’s Mascot. Cherelle Zeigler is a Graduate of the School. She’s adamant that doing away with the Red Raider name would wipe away the past. Bellefonte Retires Red Raiders Mascot Imagery

The Bellefonte Area School District has decided to retire the Red Raiders mascot imagery after months of debate and extensive research by the school district. Next up is a meeting to discuss and vote on the continued use of the Red Raiders nickname to represent the district.
The Native American imagery and Red Raiders moniker that is used by the district’s sports teams have been hotly debated since last June, when some community members asked for removal, calling it culturally insensitive.
This came as many social justice protests took place around the country during the spring and summer of 2020. ....
