BED-STUY, BROOKLYN A massive gang takedown this week has brought charges against 19 members connected to a cycle of shootings that has plagued Central Brooklyn for years, prosecutors announced.
Authorities unveiled two indictments Wednesday against members of the 900 street gang, which run various crews throughout Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights and are responsible for at least 13 acts of violence in the last year, including two murders, officials said.
The indictments are a major breakthrough in law enforcement s efforts to curb an ongoing shooting surge that escalated in the borough last year, according to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. ....

More Than a Dozen Charged in Brooklyn Gang Takedown; Accused of Murder, Shootings: DA

Additionally, three of the defendants in the 11-count indictment were arraigned in Brooklyn Supreme Court. They were variously charged with second- and fourth-degree conspiracy, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. They face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the top conspiracy charge.
The accused range from 16 to 24 years old.
Citing the 77-count indictment, Gonzalez said that the accused are allegedly members of a violent street gang known as 900 Gang an umbrella organization comprised of affiliated street gangs operating in Brooklyn, including SMG and Jayson Fam (JSF).
According to the indictment, between April 19, 2019 and Nov. 20, 2020, 900 members engaged in violence to establish territorial dominance. SMG and JSF controlled certain areas in Brooklyn, including the Sumner Houses, Tompkins Houses and 303 Vernon Avenue developments of the New York City Housing Authority, located ....

Why Are Shootings and Murders Up in New York City in 2020?

The statistics are grim: 1,480 shootings in New York City as of Thursday, almost double the 748 logged during the same period last year. The city is expected to finish 2020 with a 14-year high in that category of violence, according to Police Commissioner Dermot Shea.
Meanwhile, murders are up 40%, from 312 in 2019 to 436 so far, NYPD records show.
