Gaston County animal shelter employees reflect on new facility
Employees of Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement finally showed off the features of their new animal shelter nearly a year after it began taking in animals.
Governed by Gaston County Police, the 21,650-square-feet shelter replaced a shelter in Dallas Park, which opened in the late 1960s when Gaston County’s population was about 148,000, according to Gaston County Police Chief Joseph Ramey. Gaston County’s estimated population is now about 224,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
“Whenever you add people, you add pets,” Ramey said during a ribbon cutting held at the shelter on Friday, April 16. “It’s a new beginning for animals, the shelter and for Gaston County with this new facility.” ....

New Gaston County animal shelter administrator starts Monday

Gaston County Police Department’s administrator of Animal Care and Enforcement resigned last month after six years in the position.
Dr. Kristine Blankenship, a licensed veterinarian for more than two decades, began her role with Gaston County on Jan. 5, 2015. She resigned on March 5, 2021, according to county records, upon starting a new position elsewhere, according to Gaston County Manager Kim Eagle.
Blankenship, a former instructor at Gaston College’s Veterinary Technology program, earned a salary of $97,924 when she left the county.
As administrator, Blankenship was responsible for managing operations at the county animal shelter, where dogs and cats are available for adoption. She managed nine employees directly, including the shelter s supervisor, Tyler Moore, who also supervises a staff of nine. ....

Grant helps cover cost of spay/neuter surgery

The Animal League of Gaston County received a $25,000 grant for spay/neuter surgeries through The S. L. Gimbel Foundation, via the Inland Empire Community Foundation based in California. The grant will provide 500 subsidized spay/neuter surgeries for approximately 290 dogs and 210 cats.
“We are nearing the completion of the grant cycle,” said Terry Kenny, executive director of the Gaston Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic, “and we still have some appointments available for spay/neuter services that will be subsidized by the grant.”
To qualify for one of the $20 Gimbel-subsidized grant surgeries, Gaston County pet owners must receive Medicaid, food stamps or WIC (Women, Infants Children), or have a demonstrated financial need due to a disability, sickness, unemployment or temporary unemployment due to COVID-19. ....
