Desert Sands Unified once again making beautiful music Mary E. B. Perry Desert Sands Unified School District (DSUSD) schools, the Desert Sands Educational Foundation (DSEF), with funds provided by an Inland Empire Community Foundation grant, recently purchased more than 1,000 instrument bell covers for the music programs throughout the district. With these covers, all 11 DSUSD bands can now practice and perform indoors while following all current COVID regulations. The covers prevent the cross contamination and spread of droplet infection. “It is great to be able to play with the students again in person, said Michael Fleischmann, Ed.D., director of music from Desert Ridge Academy. Being able to play indoors with the weather changing is also a game changer for us. Thank you for your support of our programs.” ....
Grant helps cover cost of spay/neuter surgery Special to The Gazette The Animal League of Gaston County received a $25,000 grant for spay/neuter surgeries through The S. L. Gimbel Foundation, via the Inland Empire Community Foundation based in California. The grant will provide 500 subsidized spay/neuter surgeries for approximately 290 dogs and 210 cats. “We are nearing the completion of the grant cycle,” said Terry Kenny, executive director of the Gaston Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic, “and we still have some appointments available for spay/neuter services that will be subsidized by the grant.” To qualify for one of the $20 Gimbel-subsidized grant surgeries, Gaston County pet owners must receive Medicaid, food stamps or WIC (Women, Infants Children), or have a demonstrated financial need due to a disability, sickness, unemployment or temporary unemployment due to COVID-19. ....
