Today in history: Cadillac students lace teacher's drink with laxatives

May 25, 1921
The McClain Brothers, Roy, aged 12 and Lyle, 10, were taken into custody today by the police, charged with being members of the desperate gang of juvenile desperadoes that has been committing depredations about the city for several weeks. The two alleged culprits were taken to the detention home where they will be kept together with Donald Woolley, 8, until Probate Judge Breen returns from Detroit to dispose of their cases. The McClain lads could not be found Saturday when the youngest of the trio was arrested. They returned to the parental home, however, and the police were notified. It is believed by the police that the arrest of he youngsters will put a stop to numerous cases of petty larceny and more serious offenses that have been reported for some time past. The boys stole boats, fishing tackle, tools, bicycles and other articles and were apprehended after they had broken into the Cass School. A short time ago the boys stole a boat and then sent by the chief ....

Today in history: Bad boy gangster captured in barn

May 24, 1921
Donald Wooley, 8 years old, arrested by local police Friday night, is a confessed member of the gang of juvenile outlaws who have kept the police blotter black with complaints for the past several days. Don was found sleeping in a barn back of his father’s home and now is musing over his acts at the detention home on Cottage Street while the police are seeking Lyle McClain, 10, and Roy McClain, about 12 years old, the other adventurers. Don will face a larceny charge in court Monday and probably will be sent to an institution as the parents of the three boys say they can do nothing with them. Guy Wooley is the father of the captive, whose mother is dead. Mr. and Mrs. George McClain, also of West Division, are the parents of the other lads. Nearly half a hundred separate offenses have been committed recently by the lads, all the way from skipping school and stealing to the more serious charges of breaking and entering buildings and forcing seals on freight car ....

Republicans Greet Covid Stimulus With Another Round of Inflation Fearmongering

Their cry-wolf act is well practiced but lacks credibility.

In a tale as old as time, Ohio Senator Rob Portman is concerned that the recently passed Covid relief package will lead to inflation.
Predictably, conservatives are once again warning about inflation. This happens every time a Democrat takes office even if he merely continues the identical policies of his Republican predecessor. Unfortunately, these concerns, which always receive wide media attention, are costly, politically and economically. Bill Clinton was forced to adopt a deficit reduction plan in 1993 that led to the defeat of many Democrats in 1994 and the installation of Newt Gingrich as speaker of the House. Barack Obama was forced to scale back his stimulus plan in 2009 and was browbeaten into deficit reduction in 2011. And that paved the way for Donald Trump by keeping the economy running in slow gear throughout Obama’s presidency.  ....

The toppling of the statue of the slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol was a bittersweet moment for 23-year-old Nasra Ayub.
The community activist, who has always called the city home, remembers the long-standing campaigns to remove iconography of Colston in schools, public buildings and spaces. She graduated from the University of Bristol feeling disheartened by how little movement there was to remove tributes to those involved with slavery.
