This year marks 30 years since Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces occupying Kuwait were defeated and forcefully removed by American and coalition partners during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Douglas F. Slater, operational planner and analyst, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command G-52, served as a plans officer to the 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized), “The Big Red One,” during Desert Storm, considered the Army’s first space war from Jan. 1 to Feb. 28, 1991.
Slater, then a newly promoted major in the U.S. Army, served as a tactical planner in the 1st Infantry Division G-3 Plans department when the division unfurled its colors in Saudi Arabia in December 1990. He said space-based capabilities were key to enabling the division’s successful completion of operations during the 100-hour ground campaign

Colonel Geoffrey A. Whittenberg graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate from Oklahoma State University s ROTC program in 1997, with a degree in Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (Forestry), and received his commission as an Aviation Officer. He attended the Aviation Officer Basic Course and graduated flight school in 1998 as an OH-58D-rated Aviator.
His first assignment after flight school was in the 1st Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York, where he served as a platoon leader, deploying to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Forge and subsequently as the battalion assistant S-3. Following the Aviation Advanced Course, COL Whittenberg served in the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart, Georgia, where he served as the squadron S1, deploying to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operatio

III Corps and Fort Hood will soon have a new deputy commander, according to a news release from the Defense Department.
In announcing general officer assignments on Monday, the Army Chief of Staffâs office said Maj. Gen. Steven W. Gilland, commanding general of the 2nd Infantry Division (Combined), Eighth Army, Republic of Korea, will become the deputy commanding general of III Corps at Fort Hood.
Gilland was commissioned from the United States Military Academy in 1990. As an Infantry officer, he served in a variety of tactical assignments in Air Assault, Armor, Mechanized Infantry, Ranger and Special Operations units. He has served in the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized), 2nd Infantry Division (Mechanized), 75th Ranger Regiment, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, the 1st Cavalry Division, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and the United States Military Academy.
