The post-Trump global hangover × US President Joe Biden’s discovering that unravelling the Trump Effect is a tough and complex task The ghost of Donald Trump is hanging over global politics. Trump, in his maverick fashion, tossed diplomatic alliances and global treaties into the dustbin like the wrapping paper off an Amazon parcel. He left America’s NATO allies dumbstruck by declaring he would cut back on NATO spending unless the Europeans upped their defence budgets to the 2 per cent promised for decades. “We won’t be suckers any more,” he declared in a rudely undiplomatic turn of phrase. It could be said President Joe Biden’s the anti-Trump in the best possible way. He can’t fly to Europe to offer an emollient, healing touch. But he’ll be on video-link for the NATO summit with his “America is back” message that begins later today. He isn’t abandoning Trump’s demand that Europe spend more on its own defence but he’ll attempt to assure Am ....

President Biden must protect and restore Alaska’s troubled oceans Author: Rick Steiner Published February 4 Share on Facebook Print article President Joe Biden’s commitment to protecting 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030 (“30x30”) is one of the most significant environmental commitments of his early presidency. A central focus of this long-overdue effort must be Alaska’s vast but troubled offshore waters. The Marine Conservation Institute confirms that although half of all waters in the Pacific Islands region are “strongly protected,” none of Alaska’s waters currently receive such protection. None. ....

Biden s blunders, chapter one Extending New START agreement with Russia and revoking Trump executive order directed at China yield little in return Follow Us Question of the Day ANALYSIS/OPINION: We haven’t even reached the two-week mark in Joe Biden’s presidency but his serious mistakes in foreign policy and national security are already piling up. It’s not too early to detect a pattern in Mr. Biden’s decisions and the glimmerings of a policy that guides him. In his decisions to offer Russia a continuation of the New START agreement, rejoining the 2015 Paris Climate Accord and revoking former President Trump’s executive order preventing Chinese equipment from possibly dominating the U.S. power grid, Mr. Biden has given something and received nothing in return. ....
