Some may know Hardwicke best for directing the first âTwilightâ film, but vampires are not where her filmmaking began. Her first film, âThirteen ,â received critical acclaim as a heart-wrenching depiction of teenage life that still holds up nearly 20 years later. Courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes Hardwicke joined UC Santa Barbaraâs Pollock Theater director Matthew Ryan, for a virtual discussion about the making of âThirteen,â a 2003 coming-of-age film lauded for its terrifyingly realistic depiction of issues faced by young teenage girls in Los Angeles. ....

These margins were the inspiration for “Borders,” the spring film discussion series presented by UC Santa Barbara’s Carsey-Wolf Center (CWC). “As with all of our series, we hope to expand our audiences’ understanding of borders in film and media,” said Patrice Petro, Dick Wolf Director of the CWC and Presidential Chair in Media Studies. “Each film we have selected interrogates different geographical terrains and forms of crossing, and each invites viewers to think of borders and bordering in new ways. ....
January 20, 2021 at 11:05 am by Sunidhi Sridhar Last Thursday, as part of the Carsey-Wolf Centerâs âScript to Screenâ series, Director of Pollock Theater Matt Ryan was virtually joined by Oscar-winning screenwriter Charles Randolph for an engaging conversation about his work on âThe Big Shortâ (2015), a true-crime comedy that takes place during the financial crisis of 2008. Sunidhi Sridhar / Daily Nexus âThe Big Short,â based on a real story chronicled in 2010âs âThe Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machineâ by Michael Lewis, follows a group of young Wall Street traders who gain enormous profits by betting against the housing market in anticipation of its impending collapse. Randolph, who adapted the screenplay for the film alongside director Adam McKay, started the conversation by commending Lewisâs ability to capture the story in his book, which he said helped to write the script. ....
