Country music trailblazer Charley Pride died Saturday at the age of 86 of complications of COVID-19. News of Pride s death was first announced through the singer’s website.
Known for breaking systemic racial barriers in the country music industry, Pride became a celebrated name in a predominantly white genre. Hits such as “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’” and “Just Between You and Me” helped propel the North Texas resident to numerous Grammys and other highly regarded country music awards.
Pride was born on March 18, 1934, in Sledge, Mississippi. He started a family in Montana, but made Texas his eventual home. Outside of music, Pride was a predominant figure in Major League Baseball as a one-time part-owner of the Texas Rangers and as a frequent performer of the National Anthem at the team’s home games. An avid baseball fan, Pride played in the Negro American League, pursuing a career in baseball in his youth. ....

American country music legend Charley Pride has become a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic. Pride is dead at age 86.
RCA Records recording artist Pride was at one time the second biggest selling RCA artist after Elvis Presley. He is also one of only three African-American artists to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
In the 1950s Pride excelled in sport and was a baseball player for the Memphis Red Sox.
In 1958 Charley visited Sun Records in Memphis and diverted his vocation to music. In 1971 he had his biggest hit ‘Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’. ....

America’s out-of-control Coronavirus pandemic has claimed the life of another music legend, the iconic country singer Charley Pride. One of the great song interpreters of all time, Pride’s sensitive but resounding baritone delivered him every accolade possible in the industry, including the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Grand Ole Opry and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He died in Dallas on Saturday at age 86, his PR firm said.
Between 1966 and 1987, Pride released 52 top ten singles, including 30 that reached number one. His indelible sides include “Just Between You And Me,” “Is Anybody Goin’ To San Antone,” “Crystal Chandeliers,” and “All I Have To Offer You (Is Me).” He was a gifted interpreter of Hank Williams, whom he admired, including hits on “Kaw-Liga” and “Honky Tonk Blues.” He’d been active on the road and was the subject of a PBS American Masters documentary in 2019.
