OSF HealthCare / Courtesy For Robin Dennewitz, the best part of her cleaning job at OSF Healthcare St. Joseph Medical Center is talking to the patients. And they’ve never needed her more. They need Dennewitz to keep them safe and for a little companionship. Visitor policies are a lot tighter because of the pandemic. “Sometimes during COVID, they’re really talkative because they’re lonely, because they don’t have anybody with them,” Dennewitz said. “So sometimes I might be in there 20 or 25 minutes.” Dennewitz is part of a small army of cleaning technicians who’ve kept patients and employees safe at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington and Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal. Cleanliness and hygiene have always been important in a hospital setting, but COVID makes it more so. Carle Health Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal has launched a virtual chatbot for patients who are confused or curious about the COVID-19 vaccine and their eligibility to receive it. Carle BroMenn spokesperson Lisa Slater said the new feature will help alleviate the recent uptick in calls and questions. “We’re very encouraged. We’ve known for a little while now that people are hungry for information,” said Slater. “We’ve seen a sustained, high-call volume on our vaccine line for several weeks now.” Lesly Whitlow, Carle’s vice president of ambulatory services, said the hope is the information empowers patients to gain a better understanding of when the vaccine may be available to them. ....
McLean County Health Department/OSF HealthCare Nearly 4,000 people in McLean County have received their first dose of the COVID vaccine, based on new vaccination data provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). The state reports 124 people in the county already have received both doses and are considered fully vaccinated. So far, McLean County s vaccination rate is among the lowest in the state at .07% of the population. Only 12 of Illinois’ 102 counties have a lower rate. The county wasn t included in the state s first vaccine distribution. Those vaccines went to counties with higher COVID-19 death rates. Several nearby counties have had higher vaccine penetration through the opening weeks of distribution. Peoria County has reported 6,200 vaccines so far (.52% of the population) and Champaign County has had more than 7,300 people vaccinated (.24% of the population) ....
Carle Health About half of Bloomington-Normal’s hospital workers have already received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, officials said Monday. The first health care workers in McLean County received their first dose on Dec. 18. That was the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which was the first to receive emergency use authorization from the FDA. The second approved vaccine, from Moderna, also has now arrived in McLean County after winning FDA emergency use authorization on Dec. 18. By the end of Tuesday, more than 700 frontline employees at Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal will have received their first vaccine dose, a Carle spokesperson said. That’s roughly half of the hospital’s employees. Most of them received the Moderna vaccine, Carle said. ....
