Supervisors Approve Urban Renewal Expansion

The Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing Tuesday, April 27 at the Courthouse Boardroom in Emmetsburg for the designation of the expanded Palo Alto County Industrial Park Urban Renewal Area and on the urban renewal plan amendment. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the meeting was also available telephonically.
“We are adding the area where we are building the Palo Alto County Public Safety Center and we are putting that property into our Urban Renewal Area,” said Carmen Moser, Palo Alto County Auditor. “The rest is for all the roads and bridges projects our county engineer will complete. We will be using tax increment financing (TIF) money, which is a funding source for us to use from the new valuation from our wind turbines”
Supervisors Review 2021 Redistricting Guidelines

Following the census every ten years, district boundaries are redrawn from which electors choose each of Iowa’s four United States Representatives and 150 state legislators. At Tuesday’s regular session meeting of the Palo Alto County Supervisors, an overview on the process of redistricting/reprecincting was reviewed.
“They start by drawing your districts at the federal level,” explained Carmen Moser, Palo Alto County Auditor, “and then they draw down to your state, and then it goes to cities, and then to counties. Every county must file even if there are no changes.”
Board Approves Property Tax Levy, Discusses COVID Vaccination Clinic

The Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors gathered Tuesday morning for a regular session meeting to discuss ongoing county business.
Sarah Strohman, Director of Palo Alto County Public Health, was not available for this week’s meeting. In lieu of speaking to the Board, Strohman sent a brief message explaining that last week’s COVID vaccine clinic for the county’s elderly population, originally scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 17, had been canceled due to not receiving the expected shipment of vaccine because of inclement weather.

The Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors met for the first time in the new year Monday, Jan. 4 to make approvals for calendar year 2021.
A new Board Chair and Chair Pro Tem were chosen by the group, with unanimous approval to Linus Solberg for 2021 chairman and Keith Wirtz as pro tem.
