Auto giant to begin using the Pirelli natural rubber tyres on its X5 plug-in hybrid cars from August 2021
BMW is set to become the first automotive manufacturer to use tyres crafted from rubber which has been given the tick of approval from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), in a move hailed as a milestone for sustainability.
Crafted from natural rubber and a wood-based material called rayon, the P Zero - certified tyres manufactured by Pirelli are set to be rolled out from August 2021 onwards for use on BMW s X5 plug-in hybrid cars, the German auto giant announced yesterday. ....

Pirelli has introduced the world’s first tyre which has both its rubber and viscose certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
The new Pirelli P Zero tyre will first be used on the latest BMW X5 plug-in hybrid model.
Natural rubber is a basic material for many everyday products, such as rubber boots or mattresses and about six million smallholders worldwide are responsible for 80% of its production. They operate small farms of one or two hectares in size and under a wide variety of conditions in the so-called ‘rubber belt’ in tropical regions. ....

ROME, Ga. Pirelli Tire North America Inc. is claiming it soon will be the first tire company to produce a range of tires certified under Forest Stewardship Council guidelines covering sustainable production methods.
The FSC-certified tires, versions of the Pirelli P Zero high-performance range, will be supplied to BMW North America Inc. for fitment on the plug-in hybrid version of the car maker s X5 xDrive45e sport-activity vehicle.
These tires, to be produced exclusively at Pirelli s U.S. factory in Rome, contain FSC-certified natural rubber and rayon and represent a new horizon for increasingly sustainable tire production.
FSC certification confirms that plantations are managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring economic viability, Pirelli said. ....

Pirelli will be the first company in the world to produce a range of FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) tires designed for the BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-in Hybrid.
These tires contain FSC-certified natural rubber and rayon for increasingly sustainable tire production. The new tire will be produced exclusively at Pirelli’s factory in Rome, Georgia.
FSC forest management certification confirms that plantations are managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers while ensuring economic viability.
The custody certification process verifies that FSC-certified material has been identified and separated from non-certified material as it makes its way along the supply chain, from the plantations to the tire manufacturer. ....
