NEW ULM Air traffic coming into New Ulm could start flying right in the near future.
During a New Ulm City Council work session, the council received a presentation on moving the airport’s flight path from a left-hand pattern to a right-hand pattern.
This issue came about from complaints regarding plane noise. The city has received several complaints regarding the noise caused by planes flying over the city. City Councilor Les Schultz said the airport is in his ward and he receives a lot of calls about this issue. Many people have asked if the airplanes could find a different approach. ....

City council discusses neighborhood parks | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW ULM The New Ulm City Council reviewed recommendations for the next neighborhood park, and accepted the Park and Recreation Commission’s scoring matrix and rankings for it.
The Park and Recreation Commission has studied this topic since 2016 during multiple regular meetings, and most recently three work sessions and a special meeting. A matrix was developed by the commission to rank potential park sites for development. Following the Park Commission meeting Monday, March 8, the highest-scoring parks were Lakeside Village and Upper Cottonwood. The commission believes the city should consider land acquisition and development of neighborhood parks in both areas. ....

Blethen Berens to provide city attorney services | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW ULM The New Ulm City Council approved an amendment to the City Attorney Service agreement allowing Blethen Berens to serve as the city’s legal representation along with attorney Roger Hippert.
Nierengarten & Hippert Law Office has served as City Attorney for New Ulm since 1979. From 1986, until the retirement of Hugh Nierengarten in 2015, three or four attorneys were providing the legal services required to meet the City’s needs, including all of the work involved in City criminal prosecutions, the civil matters involving the City and also the New Ulm Public Utilities.
Roger Hippert and Tom Borgen were able to cover these duties, but as of Jan. 4, Borgen has left the firm and Hippert is not in a position to provide all of the services as a solo practitioner. Council approves '21 city budget, tax levy | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW ULM The City of New Ulm will see a 4.68% increase on the property tax levy in 2021, but with an increase to the city’s tax capacity, some residents could see a slight decrease.
The New Ulm City Council unanimously approved the final 2021 budget on Tuesday. The final budget is $21,729,970, with a property tax levy of $8,266,209.
During the Dec. 1 truth in taxation meeting, the council had $15,000 removed from the training budget in the preliminary levy and $5,500 was added to the Concord Singers.
With the changes in place, the gross property tax levy is $8,266,209, representing an increase of $369,484 or 4.68% from the 2020 gross property tax levy. ....
