Fairness, equity is the goal of new positions coming to Washtenaw County’s criminal justice system Updated Mar 05, 2021; Posted Mar 05, 2021 Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton says the Washtenaw County Jail has a Òcritical staffing shortage.Ó The nearly 100-employee, 400-inmate jail at 2201 Hogback in Pittsfield Township averages between eight and 10 vacancies on any given day, there are currently about 23 unfilled positions, Clayton said. The motion is to create the position of Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This is an executive position in the Sheriff’s office and will have authority across the department to cultivate a culture of inclusivity, equity, fairness, and procedural justice that affects all members of the public. County Commissioner Ricky Jefferson explains its impact. “There is a need to make sure that our people that we hire are prepared with a perspective of diverse culture that we live in here in Washtenaw County.” ....

Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office forgives over $500,000 in jail debt Tags: Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton. (Credit: Washtenaw County Sheriff s Office) ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office announced that it has forgiven $509,888 of outstanding debt incurred by 31,614 individuals while at Washtenaw County Jail. Debt is taken on when those incarcerated cannot afford to buy personal items from a commissionary, pay booking fees or pay for medical and dental services, among other things. The decision, made by Sheriff Jerry Clayton and supported by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners, affects community members incarcerated between January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2020. “Our decision to eliminate this debt reflects our understanding of the stress and financial burden of incarceration,” said Clayton through a release. ....
