It’s Earth Day! And not only that but the theme for Earth Day this year is “Restore our Earth,” which according to Earthday.org, “focuses on natural processes, emerging green technology and innovative thinking.” To be honest I didn’t even know Earth Day had a yearly theme until I was googling “Earth Day 2021” last night to make sure it actually was today. But restoring the earth with green technology is quite a fitting theme for the topic of this article. ....

The Repurpose Project launches fundraiser to expand reuse efforts in Gainesville
The local thrift and junk shop plans to house more repurposing materials at a second location in East Gainesville

Sixty days. Two hundred thousand dollars. 
That’s the goal the team at The Repurpose Project set to support the local thrift shop’s expansion plans. The shop launched a fundraiser March 18 and hopes to raise $200,000 by May 16 to open a second Gainesville location. 
Since 2012, The Repurpose Project, located at 1920 NE 23rd Ave, has been home to salvaged materials ranging from old canoes, furniture items and bus seats to vinyl records, building and art supplies.  ....

This 'Hygiene Hub' Is Run By People Experiencing Homelessness – Next City


“People don’t realize that these things happen because there’s an utter lack of infrastructure there’s no place to dump household trash and in that 70-city block at that point there were a total of two public bathrooms,” notes Sandra Comstock, a sociologist and advocate for houseless people. She saw a logical alternative to an enhanced services district: Fund a safe space where people could access a hot shower, bathrooms, laundry and basic medical care, as well as dump trash.
To follow through took two years and a complex series of county and city permits, near constant fundraising and COVID-19. By the end of last year, the Hygiene Hub opened beneath the Morrison Bridge with portable toilets and a shower with hot water. This spring, the hub will roll out its clothing and bedding exchange. By late summer, a cadre of nurse volunteers will begin offering a full range of foot and wound care. ....
