TUSCALOOSA DJ Dale was the real winner of Alabama’s annual A-Day scrimmage last Saturday. Despite the circus catches and big hits, Dale stole the show in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Crimson Tide defensive tackle, a former all-state player at Clay-Chalkville High School, surprised his girlfriend with a proposal and he got the answer he was looking for. An on-field video catches Dale as he holds her hand, drops down to one knee and pops the question. She said yes. The Clay-Chalkville product has been a regular on Alabama’s defensive front for the past two years, logging 10 starts in an injury-shortened freshman year and recording 22 tackles in 13 games played last year for the SEC and national champs. ....
By Erica Thomas, managing editor TRUSSVILLE A Hewitt-Trussville High School senior started a petition after learning the school would not have a traditional Senior Awards Day. Instead, the school will post information online to showcase senior achievements. Mercy Powers hopes her petition will gain enough attention to allow the powers that be make a change. “This tough year has been a toll on many, especially seniors,” she said on the online petition. “We deserve to be awarded, we deserve to be recognized in person. All we want in our last few months of being a senior is some normalcy. No one wants their last few memories at HTHS to be virtual.” ....

From The Tribune staff reports CENTER POINT The National Weather Service in Birmingham upgraded the tornado that hit the Fultondale area to an EF-3. Damage was reported primarily north of Walker Chapel Road NW to U.S. Highway 31 and to New Castle Road. Crews said winds were at least 150 mph on the evening of Monday, Jan. 25, 2021. “Keep in mind that intensity & width varied along its path,” the NWS posted on Facebook. “The EF-3 damage was focused near Lykes Blvd. to New Castle Rd.” The tornado had a path length of 9.5 miles and a max width of 500 yards, according to the NWS. ....
By Crystal McGough CLAY Despite all of the unknowns with the Covid-19 pandemic and public school systems, the Clay City Council has continued with its long-standing tradition of awarding $500 grants to one teacher at each of the schools in the Clay community throughout this school year. Clay City Councilor Dennis Locke announced this month’s school grant winners at the virtual city council meeting on Zoom, Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021. Clay Elementary School’s grant was awarded to Principal Jacqnaii Finkley to allocate the funds as needed. The Bryant Elementary School grant was awarded to math teacher Natalie Davis, who will use the funds to purchase a printer, and additional ink and toner; Davis also plans to purchase hands-on learning tools for her classroom to help students visualize math problems and explore new strategies. ....
