Church summer program helps students with reading, social skills

South Bend Tribune SOUTH BEND Carlos Buckingham figured that his daughter would not be excited about spending part of her summer days in a church basement reading books and doing writing assignments. He was right, and who could blame Cashmere Buckingham, 11? When that bell rang for the last time in the 2020-21 school year, going to a summer enrichment program like the 3 Rs Summer Youth Academy at Kingdom of Life Christian Cathedral church was probably the last thing on her mind. After all, Cashmere would be leaving Marquette Montessori Academy to go to school with middle school students at Clay International Academy.

Here's how five Teachers of the Year in Michiana approached the pandemic

As schools gradually reopened during the coronavirus pandemic, teachers this year encountered a perfect storm of remote instruction, learning loss and rapid change as community positivity rates alternately climbed and fell. With the pandemic ushering in a new era of social distancing and virtual education, The Tribune asked this year’s recently named Teachers of the Year about their biggest challenges and how they worked to meet students’ needs in a school year like no other. Kathy Shreiner, a fifth-grade teacher at Penn-Harris-Madison’s Elm Road Elementary, shifted roles last semester to become a full-time virtual learning teacher.
