How the legendary Astor Piazzolla put a touch of Bach into tango

How the legendary musician Astor Piazzolla put a touch of Bach into tango
The larger-than-life Argentine, who would have turned 100 in March, brought his early training in classical music to everything he did.
Earlier this month was the birth centenary of the larger-than-life Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player and arranger Astor Piazzolla (March 11, 1921-July 4, 1992). To mark the anniversary,
The Strad, a classical music magazine in the UK, carried a tribute article headlined “How should we interpret tango music?” that offered classically trained violinists tips on how to tackle the music genre.
The article reminded me, yet again, how much classical music had meant to Piazolla when he was growing up. In recollections of his New York childhood, that can be found on the website Todo Tango, he said: “I attended four schools until I finished grade school. They expelled me for quarrelling. But at one of them I found music: A teacher ....

The very long history of cherry blossom viewing parties in Japan

The sense of appreciating nature is closely connected with the perishing of the moment and decay.
Apr 01, 2021 · 11:30 pm
The current pervasive image of the landscape of Japanese cherry blossom is in a way constructed and has changed through history and culture.

As a lecturer in Japanese studies, the first questions I ask my students is: “What sort of images come to mind when you think of Japan?” The answers usually include advanced technologies, red shrine gates, anime and great food – such as sushi, ramen and so on. They also often say a landscape awash in a gentle pink with sakura cherry blossom. ....

BreadTube: Meet the left-wing YouTubers who are trying to beat the far-right at its own game
By making videos on the same topics as the far-right, BreadTubers are hijacking YouTube’s algorithm.

YouTube has gained a reputation for facilitating far-right radicalisation and spreading antisocial ideas.
However, in an interesting twist, the same subversive, comedic, satiric and ironic tactics used by far-right internet figures are now being countered by a group of left-wing YouTubers known as “BreadTube”.
By making videos on the same topics as the far-right, BreadTube videos essentially hijack Youtube’s algorithm by getting recommended to viewers who consume far-right content. BreadTubers want to pop YouTube’s political bubbles to create space for deradicalisation. ....

Notwithstanding his fashionable bomber jacket, baseball cap, ear studs and tattoos, Rishab Chaku – who goes by the stage name Rishab Raino or just Raino – displayed none of the flamboyant cockiness associated with rap artists. He was taciturn when we met at a plush café in Raj Bagh, Srinagar. “I don’t enjoy parental support,” he said, sipping a cappuccino. “My relatives make snide remarks about me. But I am determined to pursue music as a profession.” ....

The long history of Islam in China can be found hidden in the old city of Suzhou

The long history of Islam in China can be found hidden in the old city of Suzhou
At one point it was thought that China could become the largest Islamic country in the world. What happened?
Suzhou, a city near Shanghai, once had a thriving Muslim community.

The labyrinth of alleys and lanes in the old city of Suzhou hides a secret: historical fragments of the long history of Islam in China. Regular stories in the international press highlighting the treatment of Muslims in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region tend to obscure the fact that Islam was once highly regarded by Chinese emperors. ....
