When Elise Stefanik was elected to the House of Representatives in 2014, she was hailed as the fresh face of the new GOP. Stefanik had run for office in her 20s, determined to modernize the Republican Party to attract more women and appeal to her fellow millennials. In her victory speech, she praised her opponents for their good-faith participation in the miracle of American democracy. “No matter their party, our democratic process is strengthened by those individuals willing to put forth their ....

Is traffic becoming too dangerous on Ocala's Maricamp Road?

Tim Skudrovec has driven Maricamp Road for more than 30 years. These days, he s a frequent visitor at Taqueria Lupe, a Mexican food truck that parks in a vacant lot in the 7100 block of Southeast Maricamp in Silver Springs Shores.
He said traffic along the four-lane roadway is usually congested, especially around 5 p.m.
“Traffic is backed up from Baseline Road to Silver Springs Shores,” said Skudrovec, a former Shores resident who now lives in Citrus County.
He worries about road safety. So does Carolyn Mason. Six or so times a week, she drives Maricamp while dropping off and picking up her grandchildren from school. ....

In Sarasota, progress made on homelessness, but still work to be done

Yet another noteworthy occasion occurred on this date 15 years ago.
On Feb. 14, 2006, New College of Florida hosted a lively public forum. The hot topic: homelessness.
The event responded to the National Coalition for the Homeless’ designation of Sarasota as America’s “meanest city.” Sarasota was tagged after the City Commission passed an ordinance authorizing police to arrest homeless people for camping in outdoor public spaces.
Some proponents of the local law simply wanted to sweep away homeless folks. Others believed the ordinance was the best available tool for getting people off the streets.
The label riled up locals, prompting Jake Hartvigsen, who worked for New College, to call me. He asked how the community might respond to the bad publicity by starting something good. We agreed to jointly sponsor a public forum, which attracted a capacity crowd at Sainer Pavilion. ....

AS healthcare workers struggle to contain a second wave of COVID-19, some hope is at hand with the formal licensing approval of a simple, efficient, portable and cost-effective device that delivers consistently high levels of oxygen to COVID-19 patients and helps keep their lungs from collapsing.
This proudly South African invention, named OxERA (Oxygen-Efficient Respiratory Aid), could be a game changer where there are a large number of COVID-19 patients lacking skilled staff, ICU and high care facilities, and insufficient bulk oxygen supplies. ....
