The work of area volunteers and unsung heroes was honored Wednesday during the New Bern Sun Journal’s 52 Faces of Community Recognition Drive-Thru Celebration at Union Point Park. Now in its fourth year, the event spotlights those individuals featured in the paper’s weekly 52 Faces of Community feature, which focuses on those who have made a positive difference in the community. Antoinette Boskey-Chadwick was also chosen as this year’s recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service. The award honors “Outstanding Americans who are making a difference.” She will represent Craven County this summer at the national Jefferson Awards event this summer. Past Jefferson Award winners include Tharesa Lee, Ben Watford, and Patti Peebles. ....
LAKELAND Most of Polk County s large high school graduation ceremonies are returning to the RP Funding Center in May. “We are truly looking forward to celebrating our graduating seniors and all of their hard work,” Tami Dawson, regional assistant superintendent for high schools, said in a Thursday evening press release. “This has been another unusual and challenging year, but we want to do our best to preserve important rites of passage like graduation ceremonies. While honoring our students, we must also stay vigilant in keeping up the fight against COVID-19.” Last year, with the pandemic looming over all large gatherings, the district partnered with the Detroit Tigers and hosted graduation ceremonies on Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, with socially distanced guests and graduates wearing masks. ....

NIU’s Concert Choir, Chamber Choir and University Chorus to host in-person and virtual concert DeKALB – NIU’s Concert Choir, Chamber Choir and University Chorus will host a concert, available for in-person viewing for family members and virtual streaming, from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building. The event will be the first live concert from these three groups since February 2020. The three music groups will be performing separately with the University Chorus performing global folk music, the Chamber Choir with music of the 17th Century English Madrigal school and the Concert Choir with original compositions, said Eric Johnson, NIU’s director of Choral Activities. ....
