This a good weekend to visit two of New Bern s oldest predominately black neighborhoods to help in a community cleanup and to attend a public Community Resource Fair. Cleanup volunteers are welcome April 29 through May 1, any amount of time from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. PPE provided and Covid precautions will be in place. Call 349-8274. The city of New Bern Public Works will assist in supplies and trash haul-away. Following the end of the Saturday May 1 cleanup, volunteers and the public are invited to the 1 to 3 p.m. Community Resource Fair at The Omega Center, 800 Cedar St. It includes free hot dogs and hamburgers, free haircuts and health screenings. ....
The work of area volunteers and unsung heroes was honored Wednesday during the New Bern Sun Journal’s 52 Faces of Community Recognition Drive-Thru Celebration at Union Point Park. Now in its fourth year, the event spotlights those individuals featured in the paper’s weekly 52 Faces of Community feature, which focuses on those who have made a positive difference in the community. Antoinette Boskey-Chadwick was also chosen as this year’s recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service. The award honors “Outstanding Americans who are making a difference.” She will represent Craven County this summer at the national Jefferson Awards event this summer. Past Jefferson Award winners include Tharesa Lee, Ben Watford, and Patti Peebles. ....

Craven County Commission Johnnie Sampson, an icon in the black community for most of his 87 years, died at home Nov. 5 after a month-long battle with pneumonia and COVID-19. His daughter Betty confirmed that “It was peaceful.” After being hospitalized three times since early October, she said he had returned home on Sampson Street one last time on Sunday, Nov. 1. That was four Sundays since he and wife Ethel both became sick and was admitted to CarolinaEast Medical Center. Ethel came home a week later and has since been recovering. ....
