Columbus Black Business: Elite National Building Services finds cleaning niche

Denise Ransom has walked through a lot of buildings.
As a child, she followed her father Leon Ransom through the buildings he designed. Ransom was a well-known Columbus architect responsible for many local buildings, including the Christopher Inn, Ohio State University East Hospital and the Martin Luther King Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library.
Although her father died at age 42 when Ransom was 15, she remembers the lessons he taught her about building design. They are lessons she applies today to her business, Elite National Building Services, a commercial cleaning firm.
“One of his things, and I remember this distinctly from walking Martin Luther King library with him, he said the building was designed to make it easy to clean,” Ransom recalls. “That stuck with me, as I see some of the buildings now.” ....

Black Business Spotlight: Small Linden pharmacy makes memorable impact
She recalled the time a customer came in crying because her doctor was rude.
“When I finished her prescription, she was still angry,” said Nnani, who owns the business, which sits below a doctor’s office on Cleveland Avenue in Linden. “I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to come out there and dance with you.’”
The woman was laughing before she walked out of the door.
That is the type of atmosphere the 61-year-old entrepreneur has created at the independent pharmacy, staffed in part by her husband, Austin, and their three children. Though it is a small business, its contributions to the community include everything from summer health fairs to fresh food distribution. ....

Gayle Troy paid for her daughter’s college tuition with sweet potato muffins.
For years, Troy and her husband, Eric, would get up early in the morning and drop off her homemade treats at coffeehouses before going to their jobs.
Now, customers are coming to her.
Troy’s restaurant, What the Waffle, opened a brick-and-mortar operation on Long Street in the King-Lincoln neighborhood in the summer of 2020. Even amid the pandemic, customers flocked to the establishment to get their fill of Troy’s muffins, along with the featured menu item: buttermilk Belgian waffles. ....

Gourmet soul food meals are being produced in a 20,000-square foot warehouse in Milo-Grogan. 
Tuesday through Sunday, gig economy drivers pick up to-go bowls ranging from pan-seared salmon fettuccine pasta to buttermilk fried chicken breast with mac and cheese, greens and sweet potatoes.
These “soul bowls” are the brainchild of Chef Will Hightower, who partnered with his brother, Kevin Hightower, to launch the Soul 2 Go restaurant in January. The business is one of about 35 ....
