Second supect arrested in Cheyenne Johnson murder

Johnson was reported missing last week and was last seen on April 29 near Cottageville. Deputies said they identified Michael Smith as a suspect the next day after receiving a tip about an overheard conversation concerning the murder of Sunshine, which was Johnson s nickname. Earlier this month and prior to Johnson s murder, Michael Smith had been released from jail on parole.
Johnsons body was recovered from a deepwater well on Monday afternoon and identified through tattoos. Additional confirmation will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Law enforcement noted Michael Smith said he shot Johnson in the back of the head and dumped her body in the well. ....

CHARLESTON A new development has come forward in the case involving the murder of Jackson County resident Cheyenne Johnson.
After a witness was interviewed, it was discovered Virginia Marie Smith, 29, 1244 Britton Ridge Road, Charleston, shot and killed Johnson last week, according to a criminal complaint filed with the Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
As previously reported Michael Wayne Smith, 41, same address, admitted to killing Johnson and putting her body in a well but according to Chief Deputy Greg Young of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, Virginia was the one who shot Johnson.
“He was complicit in the murder and caused other injuries. He wasn’t telling the whole truth. It wasn’t him, it was Virginia,” Young said. ....

SISSONVILLE A Sissonville man was arrested Monday after admitting to murdering a Jackson County woman and putting her body in a water well, law enforcement officials said.
The victim, Cheyenne Johnson of Jackson County, was killed near Kelly’s Creek in Sissonville by Michael Wayne Smith, 41, of Sissonville.
Kanawha County Chief Deputy Greg Young and Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger provided information about the case during a press conference Monday.
Johnson had been deemed a missing person and was last seen in the Cottageville area Thursday, the day the murder happened at a residence Smith frequented, Young said. ....

The body of a missing West Virginia woman was found in a deepwater well on a secluded farm, and a 41-year-old man is charged with murder, say police.
Last week, the family of Cheyenne Johnson, 35, of Jackson County, reported her missing, the Kanawha County Sheriff s Office says in a statement.
She was last seen on Thursday near Cottageville in Jackson County, the statement says.
Her family had not heard from her for a couple days, Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger said at a joint press conference Monday with Kanawha County Chief Deputy Greg Young. ....

RIPLEY – A Kanawha County man has been arrested in connection with the death of a Jackson County woman missing since last week.
Michael Wayne Smith, 41, of Sissonville, admitted to killing Cheyenne Johnson of Jackson County and putting her body inside a water well on property in Sissonville, according to law enforcement officials.
The Jackson and Kanawha County Sheriff’s Departments announced Smith’s arrest Monday.
