Pascal Siakam to help Toronto kids learn to code with new training program
Toronto Raptors star Pascal Siakam’s PS43 Foundation has launched a new youth-based initiative designed to address the digital divide in Toronto.
Coding for Champions, which was announced Friday during Siakam’s 27th birthday, is the not-for-profit’s first Canadian initiative.
Participating students will be equipped with laptops, which they will be allowed to keep after the program is complete.
Funded by a six-figure donation and supported by Penny Appeal Canada, the free 10-week program aims to provide students at two Toronto schools with information technology and website building skills. By his own admission, James Gosling has always been a geek. Growing up in Calgary in the 1960s, he was drawn to building things from mechanical parts and went dumpster diving to find pieces to use in personal projects.
After a tour of the University of Calgary, a teenaged Gosling began sneaking into the school’s computer science labs and discovered a new passion: writing code.

“The big advantage of doing software at that age was that I could do it and it wouldn’t cost me money,” Gosling said.

Community grants awarded to 300 Canadian organizations since 2017
