School Board Fights over New Marquee

SUN Publisher     An Española School District Board discussion about a new Española Valley High School entrance sign devolved to shouting several times, prompting Board President Gilbert Serrano to gavel the Board to silence.     The purchase of a new $64,000 electric marquee was on the Board’s April 15 agenda and recommended by Superintendent Fred Trujillo.     Trujillo said the old sign was inoperable, prompting two Board members almost simultaneously to say, “eyesore.”     The existing marquee was shot Aug. 12, 2012 and the bullet went through the motherboard rendering all the “modules” useless. Though it was shipped in 2015 to Sarasota, Fla. to be repaired, it hasn’t worked correctly since, Trujillo said.

Former Superintendent Fred Mock remembered as champion of students

Davidson County has lost a true giant in the world of education. The former superintendent of Davidson County Schools and long-time community advocate Dr. Fred Mock died on Tuesday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Max Walser, former Davidson County Schools Superintendent and Davidson County Commissioner, said he is experiencing a “flood of emotions” after losing not only a valued colleague but someone who was also a close pal. “Fred Mock was my best friend. He was my right-hand for many years as assistant superintendent, and he supported me in every way possible. He was an advocate for education, but he was also a family man, a good friend, and a farmer. He loved his cows,” said Walser.
