Health tech giant Nvidia is collaborating with AstraZeneca and the University of Florida’s academic health center, UF Health, on new artificial intelligence research projects to accelerate drug discovery and improve patient care.
The organizations will use a new approach to training AI, called transformer neural networks, to allow researchers to leverage massive data sets, according to Kimberly Powell, vice president of Nvidia Healthcare, during a briefing with reporters. Transformer-based neural network architectures have become available only in the last several years. ....

Just 10 months after Rallybio launched in early 2018, Fierce Biotech, an international trade journal widely followed in the bioscience world, dubbed it one of the year’s 15 most promising biotechs.
The New Haven-based company had yet to make any groundbreaking discoveries. In fact, it didn’t have a single drug in its portfolio. And outside of its announced focus on treatments for severe rare diseases, Rallybio’s founders had offered few details about what medical conditions the startup planned to pursue.
Still, the company was getting noticed not only by reporters covering the industry but also by investors as evidenced by the $37 million it raised shortly after setting up its first lab and office at UConn’s Technology Incubation Program (TIP) in Farmington. ....

One-dose COVID-19 vaccine candidate that can be stored at room temperature prompts immunity in animals

Among the logistical challenges facing public health agencies that are struggling to vaccinate the masses against COVID-19 is that the two mRNA shots on the market, from Moderna and Pfizer, need to be stored at ultra-cold temperatures. Now, an alternative technology for shielding patients from the novel coronavirus one that doesn’t pose that storage challenge is showing early promise.
Two vaccine candidates built from gene-therapy technology and developed by Mass General Brigham scientists elicited strong immune responses in mouse and nonhuman primate models, the researchers reported on the journal preprint site bioRxiv. The team received a grant of up to $2.1 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to further develop the vaccine technology, called AAVCOVID. ....

Buoyed by renewed clamor for infectious disease R&D, Affinivax nabs huge $226M funding round

After getting off a meaty $120 million round in April, the height of the first wave of COVID-19 infections in the West, Affinivax is a clear indicator that infectious disease and vaccine work is here to stay.
Nearly doubling that already impressive B round, the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotech has nabbed $226 million, with goals of unseating Pfizer’s Prevnar franchise as well as pushing a set of vaccines for hospital-associated infections into the clinic.
Its lead program works as a Prevnar 13 challenger that covers 24 strains of pneumococcus and is fully financed by a partnership with Astellas, as the pair hopes to beat out Pfizer’s big-selling vaccine and its expanded 20-strain effort. ....
