The Solana Beach City Council approved an amendment to the city’s municipal code to comply with state-mandated organic waste disposal requirements, based on a bill signed by then-Gov. Jerry Brown a few years ago.
“By introducing this ordinance, we will be closer to complying with this requirement,” Rimga Viskanta, a senior management analyst for the city of Solana Beach, said during the council’s July 14 meeting. “And also by adopting this ordinance, the city will have the required enforcement mechanisms in place to ensure that all the organic recycling requirements are met.” ....

Later this month, the Solana Beach City Council will approve a two-year budget for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 fiscal years, with projections that map out a gradual return to normal after a year of cutbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re kind of in the same place we were last year at this time, just on the opposite end,” Ryan Smith, city treasurer, said during the May 26 City Council meeting, when council members began reviewing some of the projections.
“There is a little bit of uncertainty on where revenues are going to go,” Smith continued. “There are certain aspects of the economy that appear to be pushing revenues higher, and there are also some aspects that are suggesting to hold back a little bit.” ....

Solana Beach council members voted unanimously April 14 to send the city’s new housing element, which accounts for 875 new units, to the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development for certification.
“I’m going to think positively that we’re going to end up with an approved housing element and we’ll be done and ready to roll for the next eight years,” Solana Beach City Councilman David Zito said during the meeting.
The council’s signoff of the housing element concludes a combative process between the city and San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) over the state’s sixth cycle Regional Housing Needs Allocation, which runs from 2021 to 2029. Of the 875 new housing units Solana Beach has to provide, nearly half have to be affordable housing units, defined in relation to the county’s median income. C ....

Solana Beach to move forward with Community Grant Program for 2021-22

Print
The Solana Beach City Council unanimously agreed to move forward with its Community Grant Program for the 2021-22 fiscal year, and to provide an extension for recipients of the 2020-21 program.
The grant program provides funds to local nonprofits and other organizations that provide services or projects that contribute to the community. The city has $25,000 allocated for the program in the 2021-22 budget.
The extension would provide last year’s grant program recipients more time to spend any remaining funds on projects or services that may have been on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Solana Beach City Councilman David Zito said the city should check to see if applicants for the next fiscal year’s program have any remaining funds from last year’s program. ....
